Forgotten Names
By Larry Linville
I see your face and you know me.
I tell you I’m glad you came.
You say, “Well, thank you, Larry!”
But I can’t recall your name.
I meet so many people.
They seem to come and go.
And so does my memory
with those I ought to know.
Sometimes I just say vague things
hoping you’ll give it away.
But when you don’t drop a clue
I don’t know what to say.
I thought I’d use a little trick
with one good old guy.
I didn’t know his name was “Hill”.
I asked if it’s with an “e” or “i”?
I met a man whose name was “Butts”.
I’d tried to keep that in my mind
until I introduced him
as my friend Mr. “Behind.”
I’ve tried about everything
in person or by the phones.
I asked one how he spelled his name
and all he said was “It’s Jones!”
