The Book Center

The Book Center
By Larry Linville

In many old churches they stand
bookcases which were once so grand.
Placed in a corner with much pride
for folks to read the books inside.
They stand there untouched yet today
where all the books are there to stay.
They sit there just collecting dust
with topics which were once a must.
But now they are so out of date
sitting in their lonely state.
It would be such a lovely grace
if brand new books were in their place
and people took the time to read
to grow from each spiritual seed.

Singing Parts
By Larry Linville

It always sounded cool to me
when someone sang the harmony.
At church my mother sat with me
and gave singing lessons for free.
I sang that alto line with her
with her voice that sounded pure.
I couldn’t read those funny notes
that was coming from our throats.
Soon somehow I began to know
whether to sing high or low.
Today I can sing every part
because of what she put in my heart.
She is gone from me it is true
but when I miss her and get blue
I lift my voice and sing a song
and pretend she’s singing along.

The IRS Is So taxing

The IRS is so Taxing
By Larry Linville

I sits and writes poems and relaxes
when I should be figuring my taxes.
I keeps busy with many excuses
to avoid the IRS abuses.
They will get all my money anyway
so it does me no good to sit and play.
I don’t want the fine for doing them late
so I shouldn’t try to procrastinate.
I really want to write just one more verse
but it would probably just make things worse.
So I get’s my receipts and checks and stuff
and tackles this job that is really tough.

Progress on my book

Here I sit all excited
like I was before each ball game I played
and before each sermon I preached.
It's 8:45 a.m.
and at 10 a.m. the phone will ring
and I will be talking to the design team at Author House.
We will talk about format for the interior and exterior.
They said it might take 30 to 45 minutes.
Am I prepared?
What decisions will I have to make?
I must remember they are working for me.
Will we set the price of the book today?
How much longer until it will be on the market?
I'm so excited
I could almost cry (in joy, of course).

I'll keep you posted.
You'll be able to order it on line.
I'll be working hard to market it.
I will want you to tell all your friends.

Meanwhile, my poetry has slowed
because of all that's going on in my mind.
I have a poem running around in my head
about singing alto with my mother.
I have a poem about the "church library".
Who know what will trigger a poem.
Perhaps Lent will get the juices going.
Please check in an see where I am.
Meanwhile, I thank you for your support
and pray that God will richly bless you.

Visits At The Home

Visits At the Home
By larry linville

He goes to visit her every day
At the rest home where she now has to stay.
He sits in a chair right beside her bed
And whenever she speaks he nods his head.
He helps the nurses feed her all the meals
No matter how uneasy he feels.
They watch the TV for hours on end
Though in her mind he’s now only a friend.
He looks at her and remembers the day
When they were classmates at recess play.
And his mind pictures and tries to enhance
when he asked her to the homecoming dance.
She looks his way with her eyes open wide
Just as he pictures when she was his bride.
His mind slowly moves at a leisured pace
As he sees each child’s likeness in her face.
Life would be simple if she wasn’t there
But that is a thought he just cannot bear.
So every morning he enters that door
Just like he has done so often before.
And ev’ry night as he prepares to leave
He kisses her brow and goes home to grieve

Love Your Enemies

Love Your Enemies
by Larry Linville

Jesus said to love our enemies
That’s surely not what he meant
He must not have included
Those we resent

He surely didn’t mean
Those with whom we disagree
Who have beliefs
Different than we

Those who do their reading
From a different book
And dress in a way
We don’t think they should look

Whose name for God is different
And their skin as well
He must approve if we
Wish them all to hell

Though he spoke of peace
And also against war
I’m sure he approved it
When we settle the score

The poor and the homeless
He must also exclude
They are all trouble makers
And it’s OK to treat them rude

He must approve using scripture
To set up factions
And quote those words
To justify our actions.

Now We Can Celebrate the Wise Men

Sorry I have been absent.
My poetry dried up after all the Christmas writing.
I keep looking for poems and they aren't there.
That's OK, that's the way it happens.
As I said earlier, I don't like to go very far without updating my blog because so many of you are checking in.

Today is Epiphany -- the celebration of the arrival of the Magi. We common see them at the creches but I don't believe they made it to manger. I think they showed up in a house and Jesus was between 1 and 2 years old when they arrived.

Epiphany brings the season of Christmastide to an end. It's OK to take your decorations down -- except, please leave one out all year round to remind you of Jesus' birth.

Today, at the Turney Church, I will be preaching about Covenant. John Wesley has a Covenant service to be used at the beginning of the year. I won't be using the service, but I will be referring to it and will talk about the meaning of covenant. We will conclude the service by celebrating Holy Communion when we received the "blood of the new covenant."

Hopefully, I'll have a new poem for you soon.
