The Death of a Rabbit
By Larry R. Linville
Returning from an out of town school event
As she was telling some story
Leaning forward from her back seat so we could hear.
We all saw the rabbit on the side of the road
Illuminated by our headlights.
When we heard the “thump” under the car
The storytelling abruptly stopped
And it was very quiet.
Except for a quiet sobbing in the back seat.
If only we could have that same reaction
When we become aware of a person’s
Life so violently taken!
An African child with a bloated hungry stomach.
Children whose lives are snuffed out as adults fight wars.
Victims of domestic violence.
Dropouts who have given up before they have an education.
It’s much easier to sit back in our expensive homes
And expensive cars
And our expensive clothes
And get upset
As a rabbit dies.
Lord, have mercy on us!
