Singing Parts

Singing Parts
By Larry Linville

It always sounded cool to me
When someone sang the harmony
At church my mother sat with me
And gave singing lessons for free
I sang that alto line with her
With her voice that sounded pure
I couldn’t read those funny notes
That were coming from our throats
Soon somehow I began to know
Whether to sing high or low
Today I can sing every part
Because of what she put in my heart
She is gone from me it is true
But when I miss her and get blue
I lift my voice and sing a song
And pretend she’s singing along
